The early years

Read on

Born in a mixed-marriage family of four, my early years never knew a dull moment. My parents were often away, creating the need to take care of myself. In my free time, I learned as much as possible about my passion: history. Because of this, I obtained my high school diploma with the highest marks of the cohort for History due to a paper I wrote about the modernization of Japan during the Meiji period.

Due to a somewhat unstable home situation and a lust for excitement, I became passionate about traveling. At the first opportunity, I departed for Japan in 2015. After two months in Japan, I decided to explore Russia aboard the Trans-Siberian Express. I was 18 and had never traveled alone before. These experiences brought me into contact with different cultures, forcing me to change my outlook on life. This is what inspired me to pursue an international career.

After obtaining my Dutch VWO high school diploma, I pursued my academic career by enrolling at Nyenrode New Business School, where I studied Global Entrepreneurship and Business. Through this program, I aimed to become an informed and practical student of Business & Entrepreneurship. This experience provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the world from an economic, capitalist-oriented perspective.

BA BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
UNIVERSITY OF WESTMINSTER   (2018-2019)
As part of my academic curriculum at Nyenrode New Business School, I completed a semester abroad at the University of Westminster in London. Upon completion, I received my second degree as part of the double degree program with NNBS. My time in London broadened my perspective on living in a global city. During my six months at Westminster, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a diverse environment, which I found highly enriching.

PRE-MASTER HISTORY
UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM
(2021-2022)
In 2021, I enrolled in the History pre-master's program at the University of Amsterdam to pursue my passion for history. This decision involved quitting my job to pursue an academic career. Over the course of this one-year program, I transitioned from an analytical to a historical way of thinking, which was facilitated by taking several courses from the four-year bachelor's program in History.

MASTER HISTORY AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM (2022-2023)
In 2022, I was accepted into the History and International Relations master's program, where I acquired a comprehensive understanding of the historical forces and actors that shape international relations and conflicts. I aim to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue a career in humanitarian aid.

Volunteering

FUNDRAISER
ROUND TABLE INDIA  (2017)
This project was a component of the 'Freedom Through Education' fundraising program at Nyenrode New Business School. Our objective was to raise a substantial amount of funds through self-initiative to aid in the construction of educational facilities in India. As part of the initiative, our team visited Calcutta to witness firsthand how the funds were allocated.

KITCHEN CLERK
GAARKEUKEN ROTTEDAM (2021-2022)
Volunteering at the Gaarkeuken Rotterdam proved to be one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. Serving as a local Soup Kitchen, it provides meals for the residents of a decommissioned retirement home, which is now home to former drug addicts. It was eye-opening to understand a different segment of society than I was accustomed to. Contributing to my local community was a gratifying experience that taught me valuable life lessons.

ALLROUND VOLUNTEER
UKRAINIAN DIASPORA ROTTERDAM (2022)
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I was motivated to help alleviate the escalating humanitarian crisis. I contacted the Ukrainian organization in The Netherlands, also known as the Diaspora, to offer my support. I worked with the Rotterdam department and helped collect, sort, and distribute emergency supplies.

ENGLISH & IT TEACHER
HABIBI CENTER (2023-present)
As a UVA student, I actively pursued an internship with several humanitarian organizations but needed more time to secure one. In light of this, I opted to spend my time productively by volunteering. Through several hours of online research, I came across Stephanie from the Habibi Center and was immediately drawn to their inspiring initiative. Given my interest in working with Middle Eastern refugees, this would be the perfect opportunity to serve. Consequently, I am currently employed with the Habibi Center, teaching Middle Eastern refugees in Athens.

Even though my internship has ended, I'm excited to continue making a positive impact through the Habibi Center. That's why I've decided to remain a team member for at least another year. My internship was an invaluable learning experience, and staying on board is the best decision for me.
